What exactly constitutes an "HDMI 2.0" device when updating a NUC BIOS?

$
0
0

I just purchased my first NUC (NUC7i5BNK) over the christmas break and I keep seeing reference to using an "HDMI 2.0" device in order to apply a BIOS update successfully.

Does this mean the cable must be HDMI 2.0 compliant or the monitor or what?

I updated the BIOS on my unit - and it seemed to work fine (but oddly the version number did not seem to change?).

But I still have no idea what the HDMI 2.0 item is all about.

Appreciate any update.

NUC6CAYH Wake via CIR from S5 / Power Toggle doesn't work

$

Hi,

I have the following reproducible problem with my NUC6CAYH:

I'm using the NUC as a HTPC and control it using a Logitech Harmony remote. In the Harmony, I set up the device "Microsoft MCE Keyboard" for switching on/off and controlling the NUC via its internal IR sensor. For switching on/off, the MCE Keyboard uses a Power Toggle command.

When trying to wake up the NUC from S5 via CIR, the Toggle command is recognized by the NUC only when sending it twice. However, sending a power command twice is not possible within a Harmony action. (It is only possible in manual operation).

I.e., when the NUC is in S5 shutdown state and I press Power Toggle 1st time, nothing happens. When pressing it 2nd time, the NUC boots. Once booted, a 3rd Power Toggle shuts down the NUC. When pressing Power Toggle again immediately within a few seconds, sometimes the NUC will start. But after a few minutes, it will only react on the second Toggle command.

I've tried several other device settings on the Harmony, including setting it up as Intel NUC6CAYH (which however has significantly less command options than the MCE Keyboard). A friend even reproduced this problem on his NUC6CAYH using an actual MCE remote controller.

The only device I found currrently being able to start the NUC via CIR properly is the Microsoft Windows Media Center PC, which includes besides Power Toggle also designated Power On and Power Off commands.

Power On works properly for waking from S5 via CIR.

My system settings:

Windows 10 Pro 64Bit version 1709

BIOS 0045

All drivers etc updated Jan 01st 2018

Fast Boot deactivated in BIOS

Hibernation deactivated in Windows (i.e. it shuts down to S5 with no hibernation file)

HDMI CEC deactivated

CIR activated and Wake via CIR from S3, S4, S5 activated

Please let me know, whether you can reproduce this problem or whether there are any other system settings that I could try to eliminate the problem.

Thanks

Martin

4k 60Hz on Linux on NUC7 (and audio)

$

Hi folks,

Since Intel won't support Linux on the NUC's, I thought I'd post some stuff that "works for me".

I've tested both NUC7i3BNH and NUC7i5BNH with the same cheap Chinese 4k TV

as a monitor using a high-speed HDMI cable straight from the NUC HDMI port.

After installing BIOS version 57, both boxes sync'd up at 4k @30Hz right

away, even in the bios.  I was able to install OpenSUSE Leap 42.3 with no

problems.  I could get 4k @60Hz by adding the following 3 lines to my xinitrc

file (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc on OpenSUSE; similar places on other distros):

xrandr --newmode "4k60_tech" 534.010 3840 3982 4027 4064 2160 2170 2180 2190 +hsync +vsync

xrandr --addmode DP-1 4k60_tech

xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 4k60_tech

Note that these are NOT the values in the modeline that are output by "cvt".

The cvt output parameters do NOT work for me, but these do.  Thanks to

forum.level1techs.com for the parameters.  Also note that the output is DP-1

on my system, even though I am using the HDMI port, NOT the USBc/DP port.

After booting and logging in, I'm in 4k60 mode, and that mode is visible in the

System Settings->Display and Monitor->Displays->Advanced Settings->Refresh rate

menu.

Audio always works fine through the headphone jack on the NUC.  Sound through the TV

is iffy.  It won't work when freshly booted.  One poster said it worked for him if he plugged

and then unplugged headphones, but that doesn't solve my problem.  However, if I use the

System Settings menus to switch to a lower refresh rate, the sound will miraculously

work (usually).  Then you can set the refresh rate back up to 60Hz, and the sound will

still work (most of the time).  At least until the next boot...

I hope this helps someone.  Video playback is fiendishly slow with 4k video.

Like maybe 4 frames per second.  Very choppy.  cpu is maxxed out.  Intel

says Win10 works fine -- it must be the Linux drivers not taking advantage of

the graphics hardware.  Anyone have a solution?  It sure would be nice to

actually see some beautiful full-speed 4k video!!  (And installing Win10 is

NOT an option.)

HD630 Windows 10 Display Port 4K Screens resize after awakening from screen sleep mode

My system configuration:

i7-7700 HD630, Screen ASUS PB287Q, MB Gigabyte Z270X-UD5 using Displayport

This has been reported several times, but the threads seem to get closed with no solution.

I just installed the latest driver: 23.20.16.4901 on Windows Pro (10.0.16299). After monitor awakes from sleeping, open apps (like Firefox) are resized. PLEASE provide a fix as this is aggravating.

In previous posts, Intel stated that this was a Windows issue. That may be the case, however, AMD and NVIDEA seem to have workarounds. Does Intel want to force customers to buy an external graphics card to finally resolve this problem?

Is there a hope we are going to get support Windows Server 2016 for the Wi-Fi adapter in the Intel NUC (have NUC7i7BNB) ?

At one point I had it working, but had to rebuild my Windows Server 2016, and now I can not see or access the wireless driver.

Please help, will be nice to have wireless access. I have my Blue Tooth working with Gig E, but not WI-FI.

Cannot update Ethernet driver on NUC6I7KYK

Intel(R) Driver and Support Assistant correctly reports that I have version 12.15.25.6712 of Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) I219-LM driver and suggests I upgrade to version 22.9. I perform the upgrade, but the driver remains at the same version and the assistant reports the same issue. If I upgrade again, the setup program runs in the maintenance mode indicating that the driver is already installed. I rebooted multiple times, uninstalled the old driver manually, etc, but nothing helps. All other drivers seem up-to-date. Any idea how to fix it?

Hi

i buy recently a NUC6CAYS with 2GB Mémory include. (with 4 chips)

to increase the memory i buy à new 2GB crucial 1.35V 1600mhz SO-DIMM DDR3L with 4 chips too.

I've the error message when boot:

Unsupported 1 Gb / 2 Gb density SODIMM(s) detected on SODIMM Slot 2. System instability or data loss possible. Please replace with SODIMMs with 4Gb or higher density. Continue (Y/N).

i look for this page: Unsupported 1Gb or 2Gb Density Error for Intel® NUC Kits NUC6CAYS and...

i've 2 module with 1x4chips on each for a total capacity of 4GB (2x2GB)

what's wrong?

4 chips for 1 each memory of 2GB = 4x512. That is < 1GB or 2GB density no ?

thx for your help

Intel nuc5i7ryh doesn't boot pas black 'intel nuc' screen and then shuts off and starts back up indefinetely.

I've had this intel nuc for two years or something, and about a week ago it started to shut down randomly.

I updated my bios to try and resolve the issue, but during that reboot it started shutting down and starting back up automatically, without me getting past the 'intel nuc' screen.

It did however give me the option to open the bios menu via f2. So I did and changed the boot from UEFI to Legacy and for some reason it worked.

After using my computer for the rest of the day, windows asks me to shut down and update, so I did.

Unfortunately, when I started it up today, it didn't boot anymore, but just shuts on and off automatically, until I hold down the power button. I honestly don't know what to do, because it doesn't even give me any options to open my boot or BIOS menu. It also doesn't do anything when I press f2 or whatever.

very poor graphics performance; Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Hi,

I have a problem with playing videos. I'm not sure if this is related to hardware, drivers, the OS (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS) or a combination of those. The videos are stuttering and when the "camera" is moving vertically or horizontally (but not in and out, i. e. zoom) I get vertical breaks or glitches in the video's frames, as if the image was put together in parts of three or four, seperately. So, videos are unwatchable. So far I've tried Netflix and Youtube. Video quality doesn't matter, the glitches and the stuttering are present in 360p videos, too. Neither does the browser (used Firefox and Chromium). I also tried a YT video offline via VLC -> same thing. I'm not really sure but it feels like I can see these glitches in other non video apps, too. For example, whenn I scroll through a list of installed apps in Ubuntu Software.

Also, Firefox is extremely slow in general. Scrolling through pages is a pain in the ***. Less on pages like search results (I use DuckDuckGo) and very bad when there are lots of video thumbnails like Youtube or Netflix.

I use a LG27UD58 4K UHD monitor, connected via HDMI. I have 8 GB of RAM installed, could this be the cause? More memory needed?

NUC6CAYH and HDR support with current driver (>= 4849 )?

$

This question has been raised before but the thread is closed now and there hasn't been any new information in wake of the HDR driver release.

Does the NUC6CAYH support HDR with the latest drivers on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

Starting with 15.60.0.4849 HDR support was introduced. The overview states it is only available on HD620 or better. However, the HD500 in the Atom Trail is based on the same GPU architecture and uses the same driver. So I am wondering wether Intel has purposely disabled HDR support on the lower end CPUs or if it does indeed work.

I ordered a NUC6CAYH to build a HTPC, but if HDR is not an option I will cancel the order and get an NVIDIA SHIELD instead.

Thank you for your information.

New NUC Cannot Find SSD To Install Windows 7

$

I have a i3 or i5 NUC (it is not on me right now) and I'm trying to install windows 7 from a bootable USB.  I have fixed the boot usb to use the mouse and keyboard on usb 3 inputs (thank you for that), but now I'm unable to have windows recognize the SSD, which is a Samsung 960 EVO.

Samsung only has an executable to run on an existing system to install their drivers, so at the moment i cannot find legitimate drivers to give to the windows install process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

NUC6CAYH freeze after 10 min after running win10

Hello everybody,

I purchased my NUC a month ago but I cannot get it working properly.

I mounted a Kingston 4GB PC3L 12800 CL11 204 with (1.35V). The HD is the Samsung SSD 830 EVO (120 GB).

Everything is up to date (BIOS, HDMI firmware, drivers, etc...).

I even changed the RAM, I substituted the NUC, I tried to install Ubuntu (it worked without problem).

Unfortunately with Windows 10 (2017 Fall edition) the system freezes after 10 minutes of functioning. I can still move the mouse and close open windows but I cannot open new ones.

I don't know what to do... do you have any idea?

I'm planning to give back the NUC and buy a different barebone, I'm absolutely unsatisfied.

Thanks

After installing the 0061 BIOS update on my NUC7i7BNH, the BIOS Supervisor password was no longer accepted.  I pulled the security jumper, and followed the prompts to reset the password.  Upon reboot, the new password worked, but now the TPM is not visible in Windows.  I'm running Windows 10, 1709, 64-bit.  I've repro'ed this issue on two NUC7i7BNH.

Intel NUC NUC7I7BNH: Windows re-size & move to top left of the screen after waking from sleep.

Hi Alberto,

I have issues with the new NUC I bought 2 days ago, where when waking from sleep, windows re-size & move to top left of the screen.

Following suggestions on this site I've -

  • I've updated the BIOS.
  • Modified the diplay driver to 4877.

The problem persists despite taking these steps.

FYI -  rolling all the way back to the Microsoft basic driver fixes the window shrink issue but then the quality of the display is not great. This suggests the problem resides within the Intel driver..

Any advice please - this issue is killing my productivity..?

Thanks.

NUC7i5BNH Bios Update from 0060 to 0061 Failed Unit Is Now Bricked. Help!

$

G'day Folks,

I purchased a NUC7i5BNH in November 2017 to be used as media centre using Windows 10 as the OS and between November and now i have done multiple driver and bios updates using the Intel Driver & Support Assistant without any problems.

Last night I seen there was a bios update from 0060 to 0061 and as per other updates i used the Intel Driver & Support Assistant. The update appeared to go through the procedure ok but upon reboot there was no image on the tv screen. The nuc turned on, fan was functioning but nothing visible on the screen and the unit would cycle on and off by itself every 30 seconds or so. I did some Googling and found some procedures and tried the bios recovery update by the power button recovery, that didn't work. Tried moving the bios jumper to pins 2 & 3 to reset the bios, that didn't work. I then tried the bios recovery by removing the bios reset jumper and powering up the unit with usb flash drive with 0060 bio and holding the power button for 3 seconds, that didn't work. I then read that removing the motherboard and disconnecting the bios battery might work, tried that and still no boot up, no image on screen. I have tried different brand and capacity usb devices all formatted with quick format ticked off, different bios versions, disconnecting the battery for different periods of time (5mins, 10mins, 30mins), still no boot up. Starting the unit with bios jumper in, and removed after disconnecting the battery, still no bootup, no image on screen. I have pretty much tried every possible combination and nothing seems to work. One thing i noticed was one of the usb flash drives i used has a light in it that flashes when it's being read and it does not light up when i turn the unit on so to me it seems that the usb slots in the nuc aren't working. I even tried the bios recovery procedures without the sandisk ssd hard drive connected and still no go.

Is this nuc completely bricked? Like is said It lights up when i press the power button, fan goes on, it cycles on and off and that's it.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I have no sound output to my HDMI Monitor with Intel® HD Graphics 620

I just got and setup the following system:

(information provided by the Intel driver and support assistant)

Intel® HD Graphics 620

Sceptre E E248W-1920R 24" Ultra Thin LED Monitor HDMI, Metallic

All drivers are up to date, according to the assistant.

Now I know the monitor can play sound because it says so, and when connected to an older PC laptop it played sound.

Other posts I have read suggested there should be a  Playback device listed which identifies an HDMI type playback.

This screenshot shows that 1 - sound is playing on a different device in the system and 2 - there is no HDMI registered

The device properties indicate an HDMI

To be clear, I hear no sound.  I expect to hear sound out of my monitor.  Sound is playing on something on the device, but I don't know what that playback device is.

Finally, when i Test the device it shows it is playing sound, but there is nothing!

There are no volume controls on the outside of the Monitor, and everything is set to 100 on the system.

Sincerely,

Adam

NUC6i7KYK - External USB HDD disconnected and reconneted when plugged in front USB port

Hi,

When I plug a Seagate backup plus 2.5" USB external HDD into front USB port of my NUC6i7KYK, it always gets disconnected in 10-15 minutes and then gets reconnected. I find this issue because when I was playing a video about 10 minutes later, I can hear the USB device disconnected notification sound from Windows 10 and then my player freezed because it lost connection with USB HDD even the reconnected notification comes later.

I was using Windows 10 version 1703 which has this issue and after I upgrade to version 1709 this issue still exists. Please advise how can I fix this problem. Thanks !

Not able to see fresh Windows10 install after connecting NUC to 50 inch sumsung tv

$

I have nuc version:5i5RYH.

Processor: Intel R i5-525ou CPU @ 1.6

I installed latest windows10 on it and upgraded it following lw1948 instructions from my prev question at (Re: Not able to install windows10 on  nuc with burned windows10 iso on flashdrive ):

(After finishing Windows 10 installation, install all NUC drivers, downloaded from here: Downloads for Intel® NUC Kit NUC5i5RYH . Set your Operating System (O.S.) to Windows 10 64 bit. Instead of downloading each driver separately, you can download driver bundle and unzip it on your drive. Install each driver manually (do not use Intel's Driver Utility). First install the Chipset driver and than the Management Engine driver. Reboot your computer and install all other drivers. Now the sequence is not important and you can reboot your computer only once after the last driver will be installed)

I will mention that I installed firstly windows10 when connecting the NUC straight forward to my small (24 inch)  DELL screen.

everything worked perfectly fine. network adapter works. bluetooth and wifi works. we were happy.

(I iam connecting my NUC to my DELL screen only when I want to upgrade it or install new O.S as it's more comfortable for me)

Now I had to take nuc and connect it back to my big 50 inch sumsung  smart T.V (via my receiver) where it's belong which placed at our saloon.

After connecting to it I could see windows10 desktop on my big sumsung tv screen cooll! but...  the screen ratio was bad. so I said let's try to change the resolution. so in the right side I have the intel graphics icon where I can switch the screen resolution to a diff one.

When I switched to diff ratio this is where the nightmare started -> T.V turned into blank screen and wont be able to show the WINDOWS10 desktop anymore. plugged off and on. still cant blank screen.

I can't even see the intel logo when turning the NUC on.

so I took nuc back to my DELL screen and I did see picture. so I was half comfort that everything is still there and working.  Tried again to connect nuc to the tv and went this routine  back and forth 100 times - this is amazinG!!! nuc is stubborn! still cant see any picture while it's connected to my sumsung T.V (but it is working when i connect it to my DELL screen)

I tried to reinstall the graphics package of my model. upgrade the bios again, same behavior. tried to play abit with resolution. same issue. what the hell?

should I reinstall windows10 all over again?? any ideas??

Thank you!
